Support Tip: Error message when deleting the Subscribers object from Administration\Notifications in Operations Manager

$

~ Keshav Deo Jain | Support Engineer

FIXHere’s a quick note on an issue I’ve run into a couple times that might help you out if you happen to see it. What happens is that the error message below may appear while deleting the Subscribers object from Administration\Notifications in Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 (OpsMgr 2007), System Center 2012 Operations Manager (OpsMgr 2012) or System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager (OpsMgr 2012 R2):

1

The Error Message

The full error message you receive will be similar to the following:

The following information was gathered when the operation was attempted. The information may appear cryptic but provides context for the error. The application will continue to run.

System.InvalidOperationException: The notification subscription was not valid for the update. See inner exception for details.

---> System.ArgumentException: The notification subscription is not valid for insert. See inner exception for details. ---> Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Common.ManagementPackException: Database error. MPInfra_p_ManagementPackInstall failed with exception:
Database error. MPInfra_p_ManagementPackInstall failed with exception:
Could not allocate space for object 'dbo.DeployedManifest'.'PK_DeployedManifest' in database 'OperationsManager' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. Create disk space by deleting unneeded files, dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup.
at Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Common.Internal.ServiceProxy.HandleFault(String methodName, Message message)
at Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.Common.Internal.MonitoringNotificationServiceProxy.UpsertNotificationSubscription(String conditionDetectionConfiguration, String dataSourceConfiguration, IList`1 endpoints, String name, String internalName, String displayName, String description, String languageCode, String targetString, String targetManagementPackId, String targetManagementPackVersion, String targetManagementPackPublicKey, String targetManagementPackAlias, Int32 subscriptionType, Boolean enabled, Boolean resetStateOnEnabled, Boolean isUpdate)
at Microsoft.EnterpriseManagement.MonitoringNotificationManagement.UpsertNotificationSubscription

The Fix

Generally this error occurs when there is not enough space available for the OperationsManager database. You can run the following query in SQL Management Studio to verify the free space available for the OperationsManager database:

execsp_spaceused

This query will give you the database size as well as the amount of free space as shown below:

2

If you come across this error, usually the easy fix is to simply create additional free space for database. To do this, right-click on the OperationsManager database in SQL Management Studio and choose Properties. In Properties, click Files in the right side pane. From there you can change the DB size.

Alternately, you could also enable the autogrow setting for the database. Note that the OperationsManager database has autogrow disabled by default, which is what we recommend. This is because if the OperationsManager database has a size that is too small and the database is set to autogrow, the autogrow process will use more system resources than during normal operation which can impair system performance. With that said, you can find details about autogrow in the following Knowledge Base article:

315512Considerations for the "autogrow" and "autoshrink" settings in SQL Server

Support Tip: OpsMgr web console generates “The Operations Manager web console requires some additional configuration to be fully functional”

$

~ Keshav Deo Jain| Support Engineer

FIXThe following message may appear when accessing the Operations Manager web console for System Center 2012 Operations Manager:

The Operations Manager web console requires some additional configuration to be fully functional. Without this configuration, many types of views will not be available, Refresh this page after completing the configuration.

image

This generally happens the first time the web console is launched and provides the option to either Configure or Skip.

When the Configure button is clicked, it will download silverlightclientconfiguration.exe and run it to install the certificate issued by Microsoft Code Signing PCA under trusted publisher as shown here:

clip_image002

However, in some cases the same error message is generated again when launching the web console even though the certificate has already been installed. This occurs despite running silverlightclientconfiguration.exe multiple times and getting the success message shown below.

clip_image003

To fix this issue, make sure following registry keys and values exist:

On 32-bit computers

Key

Dword

Value

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Silverlight

AllowElevatedTrustAppsInBrowser

1

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Silverlight

AllowLaunchOfElevatedTrustApps

1

On 64-bit computers

Key

Dword

value

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Silverlight

AllowElevatedTrustAppsInBrowser

1

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Silverlight

AllowLaunchOfElevatedTrustApps

1

When configured correctly it should look something like this (example for 32-bit computers shown):

clip_image007

These two registry values will enable trusted applications to run inside the browser and allow the web console to launch successfully. More details about these keys can be found in the following MSDN document:

How to: Enable Trusted Applications to Run Inside the Browser

System Center Management Pack for Windows Server Operating System has been updated

$

announcement_5951A951Just a quick note to let you know that the "System Center Management Pack for Windows Server Operating System"  has been updated. The newest version has the below changes.

- In 2008, 2012 platforms, the “Logical Disk Free Space (%) Low” monitor do not alert as expected when free space is 0%. With this fix, this monitor will alert when free space is 0%

- In all platforms, logical disks are un-discovered if we configure them as Asymmetric storage on Failover Cluster. With this fix, this issue will be resolved

- The Windows Server OS Management pack collects logical disk size is megabytes. During discovery this value used to be assigned to integer property. When logical disk size is significantly large (for example, when disk is of several petabytes), in megabytes format it goes out of boundaries of integer type. As a result the workflow fails while trying to insert discovery data. To support large logical disk another double properties was introduced, since double type has much more wide values range. Old integer property with constant “-1” value is preserved for upgrade compatibility and marked as DEPRECATED

- “Volume Mount Points on Dynamic Disks” aren’t discovered by Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Discovery MP. With this fix, this issue will be resolved

- MP has been modified to not discover System Reserved volumes on Windows Server 2012 to ensure it is consistent with the rest of the OS versions

Create your own fields in OMS with Custom Fields!

$
0
0

We’re happy to announce the Custom Fields Preview’s public release! Custom Fields will allow users to create a new searchable field from their data that is already collected into their in OMS account. For instance, I’m getting the following message from my Service Control Manager’s event log:

I can use Custom Fields to extract the service name from that message – named ‘Service_CF’

Now ‘Service_CF’ is a searchable field which I can use to aggregate & group data to produce new insights like ‘which service is changing state the most'!

Get started with Custom Fields

1. Use the new context menu option to “Extract fields” to begin creating custom fields.

2. Use the check boxes to filter for the ‘condition’ under which the custom field should be extracted.

 3. Highlight the text you are interested in to create a new field.

4. Review the sample results.

5. Provide additional examples where needed.

If you see a highlights that is incorrect and needs to be edited, use the   button next to it to add that result to the list of examples and correct the bad highlight. If you see highlights that should be ignored, use the   button to remove them.

Note: Providing additional examples using the   button instead of removing incorrect ones using the   button helps OMS extract your custom field better.

6. Once you like the results you see, use the   button to save your changes. Provided new data is being uploaded, you should see values for your new custom field within a couple of minutes. Custom Fields are only applied to new data that comes into OMS, not data that is already present.

Let us know what you think with the Feedback Button or mail to SCDATA@Microsoft.com

We’re very excited to bring you the next step towards our vision of enabling you to create your own Solution Pack in OMS. Please stay tuned to future updates for more features that lead us towards enabling this story for you!

Thanks,

Evan Hissey

Near Real-time Performance Data Collection in OMS

$
0
0

Do you want to easily troubleshoot performance issues in your environment? Wished you could collect Near-Real Time Performance Data from all your servers into one single place?

We heard this ask from many of you, and now we are proud to announce the availability of the Near-Real Time (NRT) Performance Data Collection in OMS. With this new feature, you can now collect any performance counter with a sampling interval as small as 10 seconds, and visualize any of the metrics that helps you easier troubleshoot performance issues.

Enabling the performance data

In order to enable the NRT performance data collection,  in the Setting page, click on the Logs tab.  In this page, you can search for any performance counter to get collected. There is also a list of suggested counters that you can add right away. In this example, I will be adding the suggested performance counters plus one other that I’m interested in.

Once you click on the Add button, here is the list that would see. All the sample intervals are defaulted to 10 seconds, but you can choose a different interval if you want to.

In order to add more counters, you can use the search bar to enter the exact counter name. OMS will give you autosuggestions for some of the common counters. For any custom counter, you need to specify the exact name. You can use any of the following formats:

All instances of a counter:

Object name\Counter name
Object name(*)\Counter name

A specific instance of a counter:

Object name(Instance name)\Counter name

In this example, I’m also interested to add the Free Megabyte counter.

I select the counter, and then click +. I also want to collect this counter every 30 seconds. Finally I click on Save button to save all the new changes.

Configuring this for the first time, it takes about an hour for the data to be accessible through Search. Once the initial configuration is done, the data will be sent at the sampling intervals.

Using Search to visualize the data

To view this data, I go to search, and type the following query:

Type = Perf

This will return all the performance counters that are being collected. There are two perspective views for this search. The first one (Logs) will return the 30 minute aggregate values for all the performance counters, and the second one (Metrics) will return the visualization of the raw results for each of the returned counters.

Currently, the raw data is stored for 14 days. The 30 min aggregates will be stored based on your data plan with OMS.

In this example, I want to look at the counters for one of my servers which has been running slowly lately. Here is how my query looks like:

Type=Perf Computer=”MycomputerName”

Clicking on the + button on the right side of the chart will expand the view to give you more details on any given metric. In this example I’m looking at the Disk Read/sec counter for the last 7 days in more details by clicking on the expand button.

Another common query is to look at a given counter across all you computers. The following query returns the “Current Disk Queue Length” Counter for the past 2 hours across all my servers.

Type=Perf CounterName=”Current Disk Queue Length”

I can now look into all instances of this counter across one of my computers. I also expand all the graphs to see them in more details and be able to compare their values.

 Type=Perf CounterName=”Current Disk Queue Length” Computer=”MyComputerName”

Viewing the Live data

You can also hover on the chart to find out the values for any of the samples. If  you make your time range small enough (6 hours or less), the charts will show you live data. In this example I’m looking at the last 1 hour data for the Logical Disk(C:) Disk Writes/sec from one of my computers. As you can see the light blue color is showing the live data coming in for the %Processor Time.

Other Queries

With the 30 min aggregate data,  you can do different aggregate queries. Here are few examples:

Average CPU Utilization across all computers

Type:Perf (ObjectName=Processor) CounterName="% Processor Time" InstanceName=_Total   | measure Avg(Average) as AVGCPU  by Computer

Maximum CPU Utilization across all computers

Type:Perf (CounterName="% Processor Time") | measure max(Max) by Computer

Average Current Disk Queue length across all  the instances of a given computer

Type:Perf ObjectName=LogicalDisk CounterName="Current Disk Queue Length" Computer=”MyComputerName” | measure Avg(Average) by InstanceName

Estimated Usage

If you like to start using this feature, but don’t know the estimated usage for performance counters, this example may help you.

For a particular computer, a given counter instance (e.g., Processor(_Total)\% Processor Time) with 10 second sample interval will send ~1MB per day (~1MB/day/counter instance). You can multiply this number by the number of computers that you have to get an estimate usage per counter instance across all your computers.

Hope you enjoy this new feature in OMS. Please post any feedback or questions on UserVoice.

 Thanks

announcement_5951A951

Just a quick note to let you know that the "System Center Management Pack for Active Directory Domain Services" has been updated. The newest version has the below change.

- The “AD_Op_Master_Response.vbs” script in the Active Directory Domain service MP failed on some environments where region for local system is set to a non EN-US locale. This was due to a date field not bring stored in registry in the date format of the region/locale. With this fix, the script doesn't fail when region is to to a non EN-US locale.

Support Tip: Ops Manager web application monitoring logs error code 80090326 when the watcher node does not support RC4

~ Arun Kumar | Support Escalation Engineer

FIXIf you have a web site hosted on a server that only supports TLS 1.2 as a secure protocol for communication, when you try to monitor the site using an Operations Manager watcher node running on an operating system that has TLS1.0/RC4 enabled, (e.g. Windows Server 2012 RTM or Windows 8 RTM), the watcher node may fail to monitor the site. The error code you see might be different depending on how the SSL handshake takes place. For example:

  • If the web server sends an encrypted alert, then you might see error code: 80090326
  • If the web server severs the connection abruptly, then you might see error code: 80072EFE

The Schannel event log will also contain the following events:

Log Name:      System
Source:        Schannel
Date:
Event ID:      36887
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:
User:          SYSTEM
Computer:      watchernode.contoso.com
Description:
The following fatal alert was received: 40

and

Log Name:      System
Source:        Schannel
Date:
Event ID:      36871
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:
User:          SYSTEM
Computer:      watchernode.contoso.com
Description:
A fatal error occurred while creating an SSL client credential. The internal error state is 10013

What’s typically happening when you see these symptoms is that the SSL handshake between the watcher node and the website is failing because the watcher node is trying to negotiate Latest Ciphers/TLS 1.0 and the website only supports RC4/TLS1.2 respectively.

This is related to the following Microsoft Security Advisory:

Microsoft Security Advisory 2868725

While it is possible to enable RC4 on the web server, a better and more secure work around in this scenario is to disable RC4 on the watcher node and move to new ciphers like AES-GCM and TLS 1.2 instead on the web servers.

For more information see the following article on the Microsoft Security Research and Defense Blog:

Security Advisory 2868725: Recommendation to disable RC4

Find out if your servers are talking to a Malicious IP address with Operations Management Suite

One good way to safeguard your servers is to ensure that they aren’t communicating with any Malicious IP addresses. In OMS we now provide you a centralized view showing all the known malicious IP’s your managed server\client may be communicating with. Working with the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center (MSTIC) we are now able to get hourly updates on the latest known malicious IP’s and inform you if any of your servers may be compromised. The MSTIC team works with various 3rd party threat intelligence partners to gather and provide this consolidated list to our service.

The malicious IP view can be found inside the Security & Audit solution in the OMS portal.

You can drill down into this tile and view the complete list of distinct suspicious IP Addresses your devices may be communicating with. We scan all the data sources feeding into Operations Management Suite such as 1. Firewall Logs 2. IIS Logs and 3. WireData

We provide you several useful fields such as the threat type for example if it is a botnet, proxy, darknet, malware command and control node, a description of the threat type and our confidence level that the IP address is malicious. This is the data that Microsoft uses to protect itself which we are now making available to our OMS customers.

If you would like to see a list of all the servers in your environment that maybe communicating to a malicious IP you could use this query: IsActive=True | measure count() by Computer

We look forward to you using this new capability and hope to get your feedback. If you have any comments of suggestions please feel free to post it on our UserVoice forum.
