announcement_5951A951

Just a quick note to let you know that the Data Protection Manager 2012 R2 Management Pack for System Center Operations Manager has been released.

You can find more details about the reporting features introduced in this management pack here.

Please install the DPM 2012 R2 management pack that shipped with DPM RTM bits if you intend to install the DPM central console. If you install this management pack directly, the DPM central console won't install because the central console installer has a hard dependency on the version of the DPM 2012 Management Pack that shipped with the DPM RTM bits. You can upgrade to this version of the DPM 2012 R2 Management Pack after you have installed the DPM Central Console.

Guided Walkthrough for troubleshooting agent connectivity problems in OpsMgr 2012

$
0
0

FIX

A new Guided Walkthrough (GWT) is available below that helps identify and resolve issues relating to agent connectivity problems in System Center 2012 Operations Manager.

An Operations Manager agent is a service that is installed on a computer. The agent collects data, compares sampled data to predefined values, creates alerts and runs responses. A Management Server receives and distributes configurations to agents on monitored computers. Every agent reports to a Management Server in the Management Group. This Management Server is referred to as the agent's primary Management Server.

Agents watch data sources on the monitored computer and collect information according to the configuration that is sent to it from its Management Server. The agent also calculates the health state of the monitored computer and objects on the monitored computer and reports back to the Management Server. When the health state of a monitored object changes or other criteria are met, an alert can be generated from the agent. This lets operators know that something requires attention. By providing health data about the monitored object to the Management Server, the agent provides an up-to-date picture of the health of the device and all the applications that it hosts.

The Operations Manager agent sends alert and discovery data to the primary Management Server, which writes the data to the operational database. The agent also sends events, performance, and state data to the primary Management Server for that agent, which writes the data to the operational and data warehouse databases simultaneously.

The agent sends data according to the schedule parameters for each rule and monitor. For optimized collection rules, data is only transmitted if a sample of a counter differs from the previous sample by a specified tolerance, such as 10%. This helps reduce network traffic and the volume of data stored in the operational database. Additionally, all agents send a packet of data, called a heartbeat, to the Management Server on a regular schedule which is by default every 60 seconds. The purpose of the heartbeat is to validate the availability of the agent and communication between the agent and the management server. For more information on heartbeats, see How Heartbeats Work in Operations Manager.

The article below contains a link to the Guided Walkthrough that will help you solve some of the more common problems with agent connectivity in System Center 2012 Operations Manager:

announcement_5951A951Currently, many of you have to wait until the maintenance window arrives to put machines/devices to maintenance mode or have to use custom created Orchestrator runbooks/tools to achieve triggering maintenance mode at a future time. You expressed in your feedback that you would like to see a feature to schedule maintenance at a future time out of box in SCOM. We heard you and are excited to share that we released a feature in SCOM Technical Preview 2 that will enable you to put your monitored entities to Maintenance at a future time. The feature will give you the ability to create recurring maintenance schedules with options to schedule daily/ weekly/ monthly. It will also give you the ability to view all maintenance mode schedules created using this feature in one screen and also give you the ability to schedule multiple jobs for the same entity. Please watch out for this feature in System Center Technical Preview 2. You can find the Evaluation VHDs here and documentation about the feature here.

Where on Earth did that group go? Why OpsMgr groups may go missing when added to a Distributed Application

$
0
0

~ Brian McDermott | Escalation Engineer

FIXIf you use groups in System Center Operations Manager (OpsMgr 2007, OpsMgr 2012 or OpsMgr 2012 R2) and add one to a Distributed Application, you might discover that you can no longer find that group in the Groups pane once that is done. For example, first we create a group as seen below. Now you see it…

clip_image002

…you add it to a Distributed Application…

clip_image004

…and now you don’t.

clip_image006

If this happens to you, don’t be too concerned as the group hasn’t actually been deleted. It is still there, still doing what it was doing before it disappeared. In fact, it hasn’t completely disappeared, as you can still see it if you look for it in the Object Discoveries pane. So it’s just that it’s not visible in the Groups pane anymore.

However I suppose you want it back, and that seems a reasonable request, so read on to find out how.

In order to ensure that you group comes back, and to ensure that groups no longer disappear when you add them to a Distributed Application, you can use the following trick.

Create a new group that has a dynamic group membership that contains all other groups, but excludes itself. It is very important that it excludes itself otherwise you have created an infinite containment loop and that would be bad. The reason this will work comes down to the reason the groups disappear in the first place. The way we list the groups is in a tree hierarchy. We query for the top level objects and then display the groups nested below them. The problem arises because when we add a group to a Distributed Application, the group is no longer a top level object and so it is no longer returned by the query.

Anyway, here are the steps to do this and thus avoid the problem.

1. Create a new group as shown below.

clip_image010

That’s it.

You will now have a new top level group, which in my example is named Expand to see all groups…

As long as you never add this group to a Distributed Application your groups will never disappear again.

NOTEBe prepared to wait a while for the group calculations to run before the view changes and your groups are back.

Enable support for Silverlight in new versions of Chrome for OMS

In April, Google disabled support for NPAPI plugins in Chrome by default.  Among other plugins, it means Silverlight will not work by default and you will not be able to install it.  If you follow a prompt to download and install Silverlight from Chrome, you will see the exact same prompt the next time you go to the page, and it will appear as if nothing has changed.

In OMS, we still have two pages that use Silverlight: The Account Settings page and the second level drilldowns of the Configuration Assessment Solution.  We are actively working to port these last two Silverlight pages to HTML5, but in the meantime here is what you will need to do.

To fix this you need to enable NPAPI support from chrome.  Type chrome://flags in the address bar to access the experimental features menu.  You will see this screen:

Look for the experiment Enable NPAPI and click the blue enable link.

Finally, you will have to restart Chrome for the changes to take effect.  You will see that a RELAUNCH NOW button appears at the bottom of the browser window.

That’s it.  Head back to the account settings page to confirm the changes have taken effect – you may need to reinstall Silverlight one more time, but then you should be good to go.

We are proud to announce the preview release of the Open Source Software (OSS) Management Packs for System Center 2016 Technical Preview 2. These management packs bring rich performance and health monitoring to favorite open source applications running on Linux - Apache HTTP Server and MySQL Server. The OSS management packs join Microsoft’s current management pack offerings for UNIX/Linux operating systems and Java Application Servers. Paired with the Linux management packs, System Center Operations Manager is now the IT Admin’s one pane of glass for full LAMP stack monitoring!

The OSS Management Packs MSI can be found here, and extracts the following management packs:

Microsoft.Oss.Library.mp

Microsoft.MySQLServer.Library.mp

Microsoft.ApacheHTTPServer.Library.mp

The OSS Management Packs for System Center 2016 Technical Preview 2 require the latest Technical Preview 2 management packs for Linux. The Linux Technical Preview 2 management packs can be found on the System Center 2016 Technical Preview 2 Operations Manager media. The OSS Management Packs are not supported on UNIX operating systems (IBM AIX, Oracle Solaris, and HP HP-UX).

Apache HTTP Server

Apache HTTP Server monitoring is enabled through importing the following management packs: Microsoft.ApacheHTTPServer.Library.mp, Microsoft.Oss.Library.mp. The Apache HTTP Server management pack supports Apache HTTP Server versions 2.2 and 2.4. Additionally, the Apache HTTP Server management pack gives you detailed metrics for the following:

-          Percent of Busy and Idle Workers

-          Consumption of memory and CPU

-          Statistics pertaining to Virtual hosts such as requests and errors per minute

-          Alerting on SSL certificate expiration

MySQL Server Management Pack

MySQL Server monitoring is enabled through importing the following management packs: Microsoft.MySQLServer.Library.mp, Microsoft.Oss.Library.mp. The MySQL Server management pack supports MySQL versions 5.0, 5.1, 5.5, 5.6, and 5.7 along with MariaDB Server versions 5.5 and 10.0. The MySQL Server management pack features the following:

Important configuration changes for IIS log collection in Operations Management Suite

Are you using IIS Log Collection for Operational Insights (now a part of Operations Management Suite)? If so, please read on.  This change will affect your Operations Management Suite (OMS) workspace.

On Wednesday, June 3rd  we will be pushing down new Operations Manager rules that will change how your IIS logs are sent to OMS.

Currently we push all IIS logs through your management servers before being sent to OMS.  We’ve found that in some cases this was putting too much load on the management servers.  In order to fix this, we’re going to be routing these logs from the agents straight to OMS– bypassing the management servers completely.

We use the same configuration for the collection of security events for the Security and Audit solution.  If you are already using this solution, you are likely already prepared for this change.

In order to configure your agents to handle this change, here’s what you’ll need to do:

From the Operations Manager console, in the ADMINISTRATION pane, click on Operational Insights connection.

Click on Configure Proxy Server and input your proxy address.  This will be used by both the management server and the agents.

If your proxy requires authentication, you will need to set up a “Run As” account

If you have firewall rules on the agents you will also need to update these firewall rules to allow the following urls:

    • *.ods.opinsights.azure.com – Port 443
    • *.blob.core.windows.net -- Port 443

NOTES:

  • If you’ve already configured Operational Insights to use a proxy and your agents have permission to use that proxy, you are already set up for these changes
  • If your agents are configured to with outbound internet access, no action is require
  • Both agent and management server need to be update to SCOM 2012 R2 UR3 or 2012 SP1 UR7 or higher
